Gender Equality

Health promotion with a rights-based and gender-sensitive approach

The Gender Equity Program is an initiative of the District of Medellín aimed at promoting the autonomy, well-being and quality of life of women, recognizing their rights and their fundamental role in building a more just, equitable and healthy society.

From a comprehensive perspective, the program understands women's health beyond the physical, incorporating dimensions such as mental health, sexual and reproductive health, self-care, prevention of gender-based violence, and the elimination of barriers to accessing health services.

What is the goal of the program?

To promote women's autonomy, strengthening their capacity to make informed decisions, actively participate in social spaces and fully develop their life projects, under conditions of equality, dignity and respect for their rights.

How does the program work?

The program is implemented through the following four interconnected components:

Component 1.
Cross-cutting management in health

It ensures the planning, coordination, monitoring, and evaluation of the program. This includes the administrative, logistical, and technical actions necessary for the proper development of strategies in mental health and sexual and reproductive rights, guaranteeing quality, timeliness, and a gender perspective in all interventions.

Component 3.
Reduction of barriers to health care

Promotes the integration of a gender perspective in healthcare: Providing advice and technical assistance to public health services and hospital units. Training healthcare personnel. Strengthening the mainstreaming of a gender perspective at the Comprehensive Outpatient Services Center for Women and Families (CISAMF).

Component 2.
Promotion of women's health and health rights

It develops actions with an emphasis on:
Mental health and emotional well-being.
Exercising sexual and reproductive rights.
Self-care, information, and informed decision-making.

Component 4.
Participatory Budgeting in favor of women's health and quality of life

It develops specific actions in Commune 3 Manrique and District 60 San Cristóbal, aimed at the recognition and exercise of health rights with an emphasis on: Mental health. Sexual and reproductive health. Prevention of gender-based violence. Transformation of dominant masculinity stereotypes. Strengthening of female leadership.

Who is it aimed at?

The program is aimed at urban and rural women living in the 16 communes and 5 districts of Medellín, prioritizing a territorial, differential and rights-based approach
