Medellín Protective Environment for Children and Adolescents

Medellín Protective Environment for Children and Adolescents (MEPIA) is a program that provides comprehensive psychosocial support to children and adolescents who are at risk, with the purpose of protecting, restoring and guaranteeing the rights of children and adolescents, promoting safe, protective and favorable environments for their comprehensive development in the Special District of Medellín.

General objective

Provide psychosocial support in the care of children and adolescents at risk or whose rights have been violated.

How is MEPIA developed?

It is implemented through three articulated components, which respond to the needs of the territory and the Comprehensive System for the Protection of Children and Adolescents.

Component 1.
Attention to girls, boys and adolescents whose rights are disregarded, threatened or violated

• Case Management and Handling of Complaints, Claims, Requests, Suggestions, and Requests: Receiving, verifying, and managing reports related to alleged rights violations, activating care pathways, and referring cases to the appropriate authorities.

• Complementary Care in a Safe Environment: After-school care processes for children and adolescents between 6 and 17 years of age at risk due to street life, child labor, substance abuse, commercial sexual exploitation, involvement with armed groups, or other vulnerable situations.

• Transitional Care – Diagnostic and Referral Center: Immediate, continuous care (24 hours a day, 7 days a week) for children and adolescents between 9 and 17 years of age referred by administrative authorities when they require urgent protection measures and placement in a shelter is not appropriate, in accordance with Law 1098 of 2006.

Strategic Management and Analysis

• Monitoring and analysis of the implementation of projects aimed at children and adolescents.
• Administrative management focused on the ongoing improvement of services.

Component 3.
Cross-cutting and logistics

It guarantees the necessary resources for the development of the project, through planning, management, acquisition and administrative, financial and logistical monitoring actions, which allow the proper and continuous operation of MEPIA.

Who is it aimed at?

MEPIA is aimed at girls, boys and adolescents between the ages of 6 and 17 who live in the Special District of Medellín and who are at risk or whose rights have been violated.
