CAMAD – Action Against Harm

Risk and harm reduction and prevention of psychoactive substance use

The CAMAD – Action Against Harm strategy is a public health initiative of the Ministry of Health and Social Protection aimed at reducing risks and harms associated with the consumption of psychoactive substances, through psychosocial and health interventions, with a focus on rights, care and community health.

Objective

Develop psychosocial and health intervention actions aimed at reducing risks and harms in users of injected drugs in Commune 10 (La Candelaria), as well as implement prevention strategies and health care pathways for the management of psychoactive substance use in adolescents of the Adolescent Criminal Responsibility System SRPA of the District of Medellín.

How does it develop?

The project is implemented through actions that recognize people's realities and prioritize care, dignity, and the protection of life. 

The main actions include 

  • Psychosocial and health intervention through community days and individual support. 
  • Rapid tests for screening for HIV, syphilis and hepatitis B and C. 
  • Mental health screenings. 
  • Delivery of safe puncture kits. 
  • Psychoeducational processes aimed at adopting safer consumption practices and strengthening protective factors. 
  • Coordination with health care pathways, facilitating timely access to specialized services in the District. 
  • Indicated prevention with adolescents from the SRPA, through the strategy “Parce, know the risk”, developed at the Carlos Lleras Restrepo Specialized Care Center, in conjunction with the Congregation of Tertiary Capuchin Religious of Our Lady of Sorrows.  

Who is it aimed at?

  • Injecting drug users (IDUs) of Commune 10 – La Candelaria. 
  • Adolescents from the Adolescent Criminal Responsibility System (SRPA) of the District of Medellín. 

How can I participate or gain access?

Access to the project is voluntary, confidential, and respectful of human rights. Participation is facilitated through: 

  • Reconnaissance and outreach actions in the territory. 
  • Collaboration with local institutions and organizations. 
  • Referral from allied entities of the District. 

CAMAD – Action Against Harm is a strategy that puts life at the center, promoting care, health and risk reduction as ways to build a more humane, supportive and conscious Medellín.
