Public policy for care, protection and dignified aging

This strategy develops the actions of the Public Policy on Aging and Old Age of the Special District of Science, Technology and Innovation of Medellín, reaffirming the city's commitment to the well-being, dignity, and quality of life of older adults. This policy, established through Agreement 08 of 2012 and regulated by Decree 1431 of 2014, is implemented through the Municipal Plan on Aging and Old Age, also known as the gerontological plan .

What is the objective?

Implement affirmative actions and develop the activities defined in the Public Policy on Aging and Old Age, guaranteeing access for older people to services of promotion, support and social protection that strengthen their autonomy, participation and integral well-being. 

How does it develop?

It is implemented through an inter-administrative contract using participatory budgeting resources, which allows for the implementation of technical, assistance, professional, administrative, and operational actions to provide comprehensive care to the elderly population of the District. The intervention is structured in three main components :

Component 1.

Implementation of affirmative actions and monitoring of Public Policy, aimed at monitoring and strengthening the Municipal Plan for Aging and Old Age.

Component 3.

Technical, operational and administrative support for the planning, execution and evaluation of services.

Development of the Service Plan for Older Adults

Training in crafts, arts, and trades.
Craft fairs and community exchange spaces.
Sunny Days Strategy.
Playful-therapeutic sessions.
Caregiver training.
Digital skills training (ICT).
Life plan redesign.
Financial support.
Care in Gerontological Life Centers.

Who is it aimed at?

Senior citizens residing in the Special District of Medellín. For the year 2025, it provided 14 services, with coverage that benefited 240 senior citizens; in some programs, more than 45,000 people were reached in actions of greater scope, according to the levels of intervention.
